Austin - Here Comes the Sun


Hello Young Scientists,

I am excited to share with you amazing observations that I made over the last few weeks!  I gained valuable insight on future possibilities of creating a pollution free and sustainable planet for all of us.  I visited the Brookhaven National Laboratory and the Long Island Solar Farm, which operates under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy.  

At the Brookhaven National Laboratory

The laboratory researches energy security, photon sciences, physics of the universe, climate change, greenhouse gas emissions and plant biology.  The Long Island Solar Farm has successfully reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 30,000 metric tons per year. During the last week, I narrowed down my observations to solar energy storage, solar panel efficiency and reducing the reliance on fossil fuels.

I also took a trip to the Vanderbilt Planetarium in Centerport, NY.  At the planetarium I saw a movie called Sunstruck.  It was an awe-inspiring movie about the sun and the earth’s relationship to it.  Watching the movie, I couldn’t help but think of space-based solar power in the future.  Space–based solar power is a thought-provoking idea of using solar panels in space to capture the suns radiation, convert it to electricity and transmit it back to the Earth. 

The questions about how we are going to power our future is on the minds of many people.   Think about how much electricity we use every day!  Many of us take turning on the lights, having a refrigerator and clean water for granted. Approximately 1.2 billion people live without access to electricity.  Some of these regions include Sub-Saharan Africa, India, China, Bangladesh, and Latin America.  I am hopeful that we can eliminate energy poverty around the globe. The sun provides enough potential energy for everyone.  What would you do without electricity?
