Development of a Search and Rescue Robot
Meet David. After hearing about the devastating tornado in Granbury, Texas last year, David started thinking about how technology could help locate victims in a disaster. He designed his rescue robot which he believes is unique in that it could survive being crushed and might be able to squeeze through smaller gaps.
Why did you enter the Young Scientist Challenge?
I was very distressed to hear about the devastating tornado last year in Granbury, Texas, not very far from where I live in Dallas. I started to think about how technology could help locate victims in a disaster. I entered the Young Scientist Challenge because I thought my rescue robot project would be a good fit.
What is your favorite invention of the last 100 years, and why?
Over the last 100 years, many inventions have been developed, one of them -- the transistor-- ended up changing the world forever. Transistors are used in everything from toys to laptops to digital parking meters. Transistors make devices much smaller and cheaper and allow for an increase in processing power.
In 15 years I hope to be...
In 15 years, I hope to be working as a mechanical or electrical engineer at my own company or a high tech startup. I enjoy identifying problems and seeking solutions to them. I think that being an engineer suits me well.
