Round 2- The Purification Challenge
Few people realize that 1.1 billion people in the world lack access to purified water and can even die from diseases attributed to unsafe water. Through the Purification Challenge, all ten students applied scientific principles used to purify contaminated water by removing the impurities in a liquid solution. The students were also challenged to separate a solid mixture by applying similar skills used to mine diamonds and gold. Judges counted the number of correct separations at the end of the round to help determine the finalists’ scores, and to see who would continue on in the next round.
Participants: Nate Bloom, Marina Dimitrov, Devin Dwyer, Hugh Finch, Nikita Guarav, Emily Grover, Nic LaJoie, Jason Liu, Nico Seamons and Claire Sheen
