Round 1- The Innovation Challenge
Innovation is more than invention. It is about combining, altering or enhancing an existing technology in a new way to solve a need. Now more than ever, innovation lies at the heart of solving many of our nation’s problems: healthcare, the environment, energy, etc. The United States is said to be losing its competitive edge in innovation, and today’s students – the innovators of tomorrow – will be tasked to find solutions to our society’s current problems as well as those that don’t yet exist. The Innovation Challenge tested the top ten finalists’ creative and innovative thinking by challenging them to combine or reconfigure ordinary items – like Scotch tape, O-Cel-O sponges and anything else they can find around their home – in a novel way to solve an everyday problem. During the Innovation Challenge, all ten students presented their innovative solutions to judges, coaches and staff. Marina Dimitrov solved the problem of ice cream bending spoons, Nico Seamons created a removable bug shield for the front of a car, and Claire Sheen showed us an easy way to get blouses to stay on the hanger!
Participants: Nate Bloom, Marina Dimitrov, Devin Dwyer, Hugh Finch, Nikita Guarav, Emily Grover, Nic LaJoie, Jason Liu, Nico Seamons and Claire Sheen
